Beth Salter
Beth lives in South Wales and studied Economics at Newcastle University. She is now an Economic Analyst at Welsh Government.

Why did you choose to study economics?

Throughout school I didn’t know what I wanted to do with my career until I started studying Economics at A-level. Unlike other subjects, it felt directly relevant to real life and helped me understand what was happening in the news and the world around me. It made sense of complex issues I never previously understood like government policies, markets and financial crises. It was definitely the real-world connection that drew me in and made me want to study it at university!
Tra roeddwn i yn yr ysgol doeddwn i ddim yn gwybod beth roeddwn i eisiau ei wneud fel gyrfa nes i ddechrau astudio Lefel A Economeg. Roedd yn teimlo’n berthnasol i fywyd go iawn, yn wahanol i’r pynciau eraill ac roedd yn helpu fi ddeall beth oedd yn digwydd yn y newyddion a’r byd o’m cwmpas. Roedd yn helpu fi wneud synnwyr faterion cymhleth nad oeddwn i erioed wedi’u deal o’r blaen fel polisïau, marchnadoedd ac argyfyngau ariannol y llywodraeth. Yn bendant, y cysylltiad gyda’r byd go iawn wnaeth fy nenu a gwneud i mi eisiau astudio’r pwnc yn y brifysgol.
How would you describe economics?
Sut fyddech ti’n disgrifio Economeg?
Economics is the study of how people, businesses and governments make choices about resources, shaping everything from the everyday prices we face to global policies. It makes sense of the world in a way few other subjects do and explains the forces behind inflation, wages, trade, and economic growth. Economics is about decision making and incentives, understanding why things happen the way they do and how policies can influence better outcomes.
Mae Economeg yn astudio sut mae pobl, busnesau a llywodraethau yn gwneud dewisiadau am adnoddau, gan lunio popeth o brisiau nwyddau bob dydd i bolisïau byd-eang. Mae'n gwneud synnwyr o'r byd ac yn esbonio'r grymoedd y tu ôl i chwyddiant, cyflogau, masnach a thwf economaidd. Mae economeg yn ymwneud â gwneud penderfyniadau a chymhellion, deall pam mae pethau'n digwydd fel y maent yn ei wneud a sut y gall polisïau ddylanwadu ar ganlyniadau gwell.
If you had a time machine and could meet your 16-year-old self, what advice would you give them?
Pe bai gennyt beiriant amser ac y gallet gwrdd â dy hunan yn 16 oed, pa gyngor fyddet ti’n ei roi iddi?
I’d probably tell my 16-year-old self to trust my abilities more. Studying economics and turning it into a career has showed me I am capable, but I’ve definitely doubted it a lot over the years. I’d also encourage myself to study maths at A level – in school, I wasn’t sure if I was good enough at it, but I ended up having to understand and use a lot of A level maths concepts anyway during my degree and it definitely would have helped if I had the confidence to study it in the first place!
Mae'n debyg y byddwn i'n dweud wrth fy hun yn 16 oed i ymddiried mwy yn fy ngalluoedd. Mae astudio economeg a'i throi'n yrfa wedi dangos i mi fy mod yn alluog, ond rwy'n sicr amau hynny droeon dros y blynyddoedd. Byddwn hefyd yn annog fy hun i astudio mathemateg Lefel A - yn yr ysgol, doeddwn i ddim yn siŵr a oeddwn i'n ddigon da i wneud. Bu'n rhaid i mi ddeall a defnyddio llawer o gysyniadau mathemateg Lefel A beth bynnag yn ystod fy ngradd ac yn bendant byddai wedi helpu pe byddai gen i'r hyder i'w astudio yn y lle cyntaf!
What is your favourite part of economics?
Beth yw dy hoff ran o astudio Economeg?
In addition to how it connects theory to the real world and helps me understand the forces that shape everyday life, my favourite part of economics is how many opportunities it has given me. It’s provided me with the tools to analyse complex issues, think critically and make informed decisions which are valuable skills that can be applied to so many areas. Looking back, choosing to study economics was definitely one of the best decisions I ever made.
Mae'n cysylltu damcaniaethau â'r byd go iawn ac yn fy helpu i ddeall y grymoedd sy'n llywio bywyd bob dydd. Fy hoff ran o Economeg yw y cyfleoedd y mae wedi'u rhoi imi. Mae wedi rhoi'r arfau i mi ddadansoddi materion cymhleth, meddwl yn feirniadol a gwneud penderfyniadau gwybodus sy'n sgiliau gwerthfawr y gellir eu cymhwyso i gynifer o feysydd. Wrth edrych yn ôl, dewis astudio economeg oedd un o'r penderfyniadau gorau a wnes i erioed.
Is there anything you would do differently if you had the chance?
A oes unrhyw beth y byddet ti'n ei wneud yn wahanol pe byddet ti'n cael y cyfle?
The only thing I regret is not choosing to do a year-in-industry during my degree. I think understanding how economics is applied in the workplace early-on would have built my confidence and might have made the transition into work life slightly easier!
